For a long time the DFB-Pokal looked made for Leipzig’s opponents. In 2015 they were heavily beaten by third-tier Unterhaching. In 2016, as a Bundesliga newcomer, they threw away a 2–0 lead against local rivals Dynamo Dresden and lost the penalty shootout 7–6 after extra time.
A year later another shootout went wrong, this time against Bayern after a 1–1: Timo Werner failed with Leipzig’s final penalty. The club chronicle still had no won shootout in a central competitive match by the end of 2019.
